What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

By Jenifer Prince Dhas Pushpadhasan · July 13, 2026

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of writing content so it can be lifted directly into a specific answer format - a featured snippet, a Google AI Overview, a voice assistant's spoken response, a "People Also Ask" expansion - rather than requiring a click-through to a full page. The unit of success in AEO isn't a ranking position; it's whether your exact sentence became the answer.

How AEO Relates to GEO

GEO and AEO overlap and are often used loosely, but they solve slightly different problems. GEO is the broader discipline of getting a generative AI system to treat your content as a trustworthy source at all - across long-form synthesized answers, comparisons, and multi-source responses. AEO is the narrower, more tactical skill of engineering one specific block of text - typically 40 to 60 words - to be the direct, quotable answer to one specific question.

Think of it this way: GEO is why an AI model trusts your site enough to draw on it. AEO is the specific sentence it ends up quoting.

What Makes a Sentence "Answer-Ready"

An answer-ready block of content directly addresses one question, in one place, with no ambiguity about what's being answered. It leads with the answer itself rather than building up to it. It matches the actual intent behind the query - a service-intent question ("where can I learn X") needs a different answer shape than a product-intent question ("how do I make X"), and conflating the two is one of the most common reasons content gets passed over.

It's also self-contained: a good answer block doesn't require the reader (or the model) to have read the rest of the page to make sense of it.

Where AEO Shows Up

Practically, AEO work means writing explicit answer boxes near the top of a page for the exact questions people ask, structuring FAQ content with genuine question-and-answer pairs (and marking them up with FAQPage schema so the structure is machine-readable, not just visually implied), and testing whether your content actually gets pulled into AI Overviews and assistant answers for its target queries - not just whether it ranks.
