What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring and writing content so that generative AI systems - ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude - select it as source material when they compose an answer. Where traditional SEO optimizes for a ranking algorithm that returns a list of links, GEO optimizes for a language model that reads your content, synthesizes it with other sources, and generates a direct answer, often citing (or silently drawing on) only a handful of sources per query.

Why This Is a Different Problem Than SEO

A search engine ranking algorithm and a large language model don't evaluate content the same way. A ranking algorithm scores signals like backlinks, keyword relevance, and page experience, then returns an ordered list - the user still does the reading and deciding.

A generative engine does the reading for the user. It has to decide, in the moment, which handful of sources are trustworthy and specific enough to draw from. That decision leans on different signals: how clearly an entity is identified on the page, how verifiable the claims are, and whether the content is structured in a way the model can parse without ambiguity. Being ranked #1 in classic SEO terms doesn't guarantee being one of the sources an AI model chooses to cite - and being cited doesn't require ranking #1.

The Three Signals GEO Optimizes For

Most GEO work comes down to three things a model is implicitly evaluating on every page it reads:

Entity Salience - how clearly and consistently the page establishes who or what it's about. A page that never names its own entity clearly (a company, a product, a person) is harder for a model to attribute a claim to.

Fact Density - the ratio of specific, verifiable statements to vague marketing language. "Trusted by thousands" is fact-free; "1,200 customers since 2021" is a citable fact. Models are measurably more likely to draw on content with a higher fact density.

Authoritative Anchoring - external validation that corroborates what the page claims about itself: citations, structured data, consistent identity across the web (a same-as graph linking your site to LinkedIn, Crunchbase, Wikidata, and so on).

What GEO Work Actually Looks Like

In practice, GEO involves: rewriting vague copy into specific, checkable claims; adding structured data (Organization, Person, Product, FAQPage, HowTo schema) so a model doesn't have to infer facts from prose; making sure content is actually visible to a crawler that doesn't execute JavaScript, since a page that's empty on first fetch is invisible to most AI crawlers regardless of how well it's written; and building a consistent entity identity across the web so a model encountering your brand in multiple places recognizes it as the same, verified source each time.
